Fraser River Port Holds Annual Public Meeting

The Fraser River Port Authority held its annual public meeting on October 11, 2001 at the Inn at the Quay in New Westminster. The new annual report was released and a variety of issues were addressed by the Chair and the Acting President and CEO.

Chair Michael Jones discussed cargo movements through port terminals and the state of the Port Authority’s finances following what has been a successful business year.

Cargo shipments for the year 2000 totalled 24,747,302 tonnes. Volumes of containerized cargo reached a record 66,842 TEUs and international deep-sea ship arrivals numbered 653, the most since 1990. A net income of $900,000 was earned on a gross revenue of $14.5 million.

“All net income earned is reinvested in developing port infrastructure,” said Mr. Jones. “While projects like Fraser Richmond are the future, port operations such as dredging are key to our competitiveness today. By doing everything we can to help cargo move through Fraser River Port more efficiently, we are supporting the businesses that employ more than 6000 people in the Lower Mainland.”

Acting President and CEO, Captain Allen Domaas, detailed various initiatives undertaken over the course of the year. He also outlined work that was done in response to issues raised at the previous annual meeting. “We are working to equalize and standardize tenure among our waterlot leaseholders, we continued our commitment to debris management, and we’re currently analyzing data from a noise monitoring study to develop best management practices.”

More information about these and other activities over the past year is contained in the new annual report.
