June 30, 2005: Over two-dozen enthusiastic employees and supporters of the Fraser River Port Authority have raised $7,850 in pledges in support of the Heart and Stroke Foundation’s Big Bike Ride.
This marks the second year in a row that the volunteer riders from Team Fraser River Port beat their own donation record, while also raising more money than any other company from Surrey, Cloverdale, White Rock, or Langley participating in the Big Bike Ride. The Port Authority’s ride took place on Thursday, June 23, outside the Kingsgate Shopping Centre in Surrey.
“Everyone on Team Fraser River Port took home a great sense of accomplishment in raising this record amount of money on the Big Bike Ride for the Heart and Stroke Foundation,” said Captain Allen Domaas, President and CEO of the Fraser River Port Authority. “And we hope we have raised the bar among participants for next year’s ride.”
Team Fraser River Port has participated in the Heart and Stroke Foundation Big Bike Ride since 1997. This marks the third year that the team has named its participation in this event The Richard Cameron Pearce Memorial Ride – in honour of their late President. In all, they have raised $33,505.78 for Heart and Stroke research in British Columbia.
The Big Bike is a fundraising tool supplied by the Heart and Stroke Foundation. It seats up to 29 riders and is equipped with car tires, signals, brakes, and even a stereo. Each year, teams from across the region collect donations and pedal the bike around town in an effort to raise awareness of heart and stroke research.
The Fraser River Port Authority has a mandate to facilitate and support trade and port-related activities on the main arm of the Fraser River. The Port encompasses 270 kilometres of shoreline along the Fraser River from Langley to the Strait of Georgia. It contributes $2.3 billion to Canada’s Gross Domestic Product, generates over $236 million in revenues to all levels of government through taxes and fees, and provides over 12,400 direct jobs.
