June 23, 2003: The Fraser River Port Authority presented a cheque for $5,000 to the Richmond Tall Ships Steering Committee in support of their bid. Celebrating their 90th Anniversary this year, the Port Authority encourages the plan to bring back the ships for another visit, and to provide another opportunity to learn about British Columbia’s history of waterborne commerce through the decades.

Captain Tom Corsie remarked, “It was ships just like the ones that visited us last summer that opened up our province. The trade they initiated when they filled their holds with salmon and lumber continues to grow. Now our waterborne commerce supports 10,700 jobs and creates an economic output of $2.1 billion locally.” Captain Corsie also urged other organizations to support the bid.
