Fraser River Port’s Container Shipments Quadruple in 1st Quarter

June 1, 2003: The total of international shipments through Fraser River Port in the first quarter was 1,349,016 tonnes compared to 984,022 tonnes during the same period in 2002. The first quarter also saw container volume rise to 53,740 TEUs, almost quadruple last year’s first quarter total of 13,867 TEUs. The Port’s other three niche cargoes, automobiles, forest products, and steel, also remained strong through the first quarter. Deep-sea ship arrivals increased to 198 ships compared to 171 ships in the first quarter of 2002.

Fraser River Port handled 3,809,348 tonnes of domestic cargo from January to March, compared to 4,501,716 tonnes during the same time last year. Total cargo activity through the Port was down slightly in the first quarter to 5,158,364 tonnes, from 5,485,738 tonnes in 2002.
