Fraser River Port Updates Economic Impact Study
Despite financial pressures worldwide, one of BC's key economic engines is still going
strong. In 1997, Fraser River Port handled $9.2 billion worth of goods, contributed $1.4 billion
to the country's GDP and sustained 24,035 jobs in Canada.
November 24, 1998:
A Rare Maiden Voyage at Fraser River Port
It was a rare sight on November 6th, when the pure car and truck carrier (P.C.T.C.) MV
World Spirit docked at Annacis Terminals on her maiden voyage en route from Japan for
World Logistics Service Inc. The 174 m ship carried Nissan vehicles directly from Yokosuka
and Kanda to Fraser River Port.
November 17, 1998:
Fraser River Port Investments Keep Asian Flu to a Sniffle
For the third successive quarter this year, Fraser River Port's cargo stats show that cargo
diversification and timely investments at its terminals on the Fraser River have helped to
ward off the worst effects of the Asian flu. Total international and domestic cargoes for
1998 have reached 15,917,233 tonnes, just under the 16,693,658 posted for the same period
in 1997.
October 22, 1998:
Fraser River Port Inducted into Hall of Fame
The Fraser River Discovery Centre Society recently honoured Fraser River Harbour
Commission for 85 years of service to communities and business interests on the Fraser
River.
August 17, 1998:
Fraser River Port signs Sister Port Agreement with the Port of Taichung, Republic of China
Fraser River Port has established a Sister Port Affiliation with the Port of Taichung in the
Republic of China. At the signing ceremony held today, representatives of the two ports
agreed to proceed with the affiliation based on traditionally established objectives of
mutual understanding and friendship.
August 4, 1998:
Minister of Transport announces major new industrial park development in Richmond, B.C.
The Honourable David Collenette, Minister of Transport, today joined the Chairman of
Interport Development Inc., Mr. Steven Wu, and the Chairman of the Fraser River Harbour
Commission, Mr. Michael Jones, in announcing a major new development of a 455-acre light
industrial park on Crown land in Richmond.
June 18, 1998:
Fletcher Challenge Canada contracts new 13.5 million distribution centre in Surrey
Fletcher Challenge Canada announced today it has signed a contract for a new $13.5 million
distribution centre in Surrey. The majority of the company's printing paper products will
be channeled through the new facility for shipment to customers globally.
February 27, 1998:
New Berth In Surrey Boosts International Trade
In keeping with a fine marine tradition, the Honourable David Collenette, Minister of
Transport, today dedicated Fraser River Port's Berth 9, the newest addition to Canada's trade
infrastructure located at the Fraser Surrey Docks deep-sea terminal on the Fraser River.
